Woody Community Farm
Woodm
ansterne School farm is a great example of a food growing project led by our amazing school chefs – its vision is to create a holistic system where food is produced on site and served in the school’s kitchen. It was set up as a way of integrating the local community with the school; as a way of introducing better food education to the students, and striving to supply increasing amounts of organically grown food to the school kitchen where all food is prepared fresh on site each day.
Support for food growing within the school
Chefs Jake and Sam initially conceptualised the idea of building a school allotment and when Chef Daniel joined with a background in gardening and food growing the idea was able to be realised with the support of the school. The garden is now run voluntarily by the school chefs, parents, teachers, school children and wider members of the community.
Food growing resources
The school has a large fenced-off food growing site at the back of the playground, with orchards, raised beds, water butts and composting areas.
The site is growing year on year with plans for a polytunnel and greenhouse on site before spring 2026, while increasingly building connections into the community to support its development out of school hours.
The site is currently used for food education and forest school sessions, with a hope in the future that adult education programs may take place around growing and cooking, as well as possible social prescribing.
Activities that support food growing
Every Thursday there is an after school club that all are welcome to attend.
